A sentry isn't (well, not if they are awake and alert) a passive resistance. If there is some sort of mind or consciousness as the resistor, then it is not passive. A cliff is passive. A cliff that is the home of a Earth elemental is not. A tree is passive, a tree that is the home of a Dryad is not. The wall surrounding Old Pavis seems to be passive. The wall surrounding Alkoth probably isn't.*

Natural resistance ("Natural 14") is only used when facing a passive resistance *and* you have the right magic for the job (Natural resistance, Page 98).
