I agree. There will be no convincing. Which is why I made my tricky situations list about things I actually think are tricky situations and ignore this particular problem. :-)

(I like your prayer in school analogy, btw.)

As for the rest -- I think the book would benefit from choosing a side and running with it. That's just because I think it would be cleaner and easier to understand.
