Have you actually *read* the Contest Consequences section? (Pages 74-75)

Each level of consequence includes non-"bodily damage" related examples. They say that the abilites that get penalized depends on the contest.

For frak's sake, people Read The Fine Book before you start suggesting fixes that are already incorporated in the rules.

Sure, Robin can add more text about how to deal with defeat, and the layout person can highlight it with BOLD TEXT and all that, but it's already there, you don't have to re-invent the wheel.

Perhaps it is the system of "wounds" which needs examining, in conjunction with the danger factor issue?

Beside the levels of victory wounds, there are the losing abilities wounds, although I can only think of the temporary loss of a sidekick in an EC and the temporary loss of an object which might occur due to the story.

Might there be mileage in loss of abilities or groups of abilities as "wounds"? Loss of a keyword? That could be quite fun actually, if it makes any sense at all. Crippling them with massive negative modifiers might make sense.
