Fight Undead can be ranged. Close combat is.. well.. its close. Also, you can AUGMENT your Close combat with Fight Undead. Remember, you can augent/enhance an ability with as many magical things as you have time for or can figute out how to apply (sort of like the massive battle magic / rune magic casting sessions before one goes into a battle in the old game).

Yes, you will use the higher UNLESS it won't work.

Fight Undead works on Ghosts. Close Combat won't,

Fight Undead will hurt things that may be invulnerable to your little bronze sword. Undead Killer Whales and the like.

Also, if an Undead has a HUGE combat skill (or miles of rotting blubber) it may be easier to attack their undead-ness rather than do the usual 'chop to fertilizer' feat.

Or when he was in bed. Preferably occupied. Prefereably with one of their own...

...if you can suborn the Duke's mistress, then you've got it made.
