No problem with the length of the answer!
My answer to this question is to let them join and leave as required
by the story, with no costs. Any benefits they accrue are temporary
and to be fair only go so far as to fascillitate that
story/adventure.
I would allow them to 'cement' the relationship with a Hero Point if
they so wished but would avoid charging them Hero Points to join the
various groups when they were required to.
