Yeah, the game system really wants you to play devotees, or at the very least be concentrated -- but Greg has said over and over that most people practice mixed magic.
In my current game I have changed the rules as follows:
There will be no concentrating of magic. Time requirements still apply, so effectively you can't be a Devotee and also a Practitioner. And you can't augment divine magic with animism and so on.
So far there's only one devotee in the game, and I think at least one character has magic from multiple sources. I doubt this would have happened before.
