I was at Tentacles myself and participated in a game with David Dunham, who had the explicit objective of testing the new extended contest rules.
Note that these rules are not yet fixed. By the time a playtest or the final rules arrive in your neighbourhood, things may be different.
The new extended contest is in essence a series of simple contest where either party gains between 1,2,3 and 5 resolution points per contest. The extended contest ends when one party acquires 5 RP.
So you can win with a score of 5 while your opponent scored 4, implying a Phyrric victory - you achieved your goal, but at great cost.
An unrelated action (by a companion not already acting in the primary conflict) may result in the other party losing RP again.
