While not being familiar with your rules choice, I would strongly suggest that you stick to your 'cliche' suggestion. The lists in TR were a bit of a cull-de-sac in the ongoing development of the cults. They left the authors tied up in knots trying to balance sub cults as useful for players, and having to make imaginative stretches to fill out each list. This led to very odd sub cults with lists that felt underwhelming and uninspired. Suffice to say the newer cult write-ups are much more in line with your choice. Indeed for the more interesting abilities you can use the new feats method, which in a nutshell is a quick description of a key mythic event that helps define the magic in context and is used a little like a 100 words character write up, but without breaking the abilities out of their context, to suggest actual magical abilities.
