I wanted to give you more of an answer, but ran out of time. One quick comment: it's hard to really break things too much. Johnny One Skill is going to be pretty unhappy when you throw situations other than combat at him. On the other hand, the flexibility of skills means that balance between characters is less important than some games.

Still, you ought to work with your players -- it can be a bit hard sometimes to give yourself a wide enough range of abilities. If anything gets broken, it's usually the characters, not the system. "Damn, I forgot to write down a social skill." Which is one reason why intentionally leaving some points allocated is a good idea.
