I very much prefer the situational approach. I also like factoring the equipment into interpretation of the contest results.

Most of the time arms and armor are roughly equivalent on both sides, so no modifiers are needed. If you have a sword and they have a sword, you both have a sword, and even if the other curves and the other is straight, they're too close to call and it's even.

If you have some fancy masterwork weapon and the other guy has a munitions-grade thing, I might give you a +3.

If you're bringing a knife to a fistfight, I might give you an +6. Make it a sword, and I'll give you an extra mastery. Add some armour and I'll bump the other guy down into the bargain.
