I would have to agree with you, and would personally probably run it as two simultaneous simple contests where a success at either one disables the guard. Rules-wise it should probably be a group simple contest, but for whatever reason, I don't tend to use those much.

Ultimately, the main difference between the different resolution mechanics comes down to "what feels right" for you and your players. Mechanically, it just doesn't make that much difference if you give one attack an augment, or if you roll two attacks, where one gets a +3 "multiple opponant" bonus, or if you just roll the two attacks and resolve it as a group simple contest. The story moves forward, and you have a degree of success on which to base your description of what happened.

Use the mechanics that YOU think will be easiest to narrate interestingly. The rules are there to give you options, not to make you stress out about using the "wrong" resolution mechanism.

If you're having fun, and the players are engaged, you are doing it right.
