And I noticed that both my mail client *AND* the TOPIC view on the Yahoo! site kept this branch of the "Augments" Thread/Topic as a subthread of that topic.

Short answer: If you want to start a new topic, do NOT use Reply, or Reply All from your mail client.

Long answer: (some technical stuff)

Yahoogroups takes into account some (normally) hidden message headers. Any reference to a prior message will group these messages together both in the receiving mail client *and* in the web interface.
