That's true. Though if I had the courage of my convictions (and more to the point, any really nice d12's), I'd just do the rescaling, since as Mikael points out, onerous it isn't.

Me too. It's just indirect enough to be annoying. If one had a customnumbered  d12 (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, Oops?, and Yay!), then it'd be a bit nicer (your second die is then only needed to get a +0 or a +1, if you really insist on keeping things fine-grained...)

Never seen one of those, though I've heard the rumours... Can't think of a means of doing a d24 that'd work well: tripling the faces on a d8, or doubling those on a d12 sounds like a dog's breakfast. Though now that I think about it (thinking, _before_ emailing? Nah!), quadrupling a d6 with a square pyramid on each face would work, right?
