Coming from a Greco-Roman school of thought, outrunning horses is a pretty typical heroic feat. There's enough folks in the Illiad and who can do it. Whole battalions at times, it seems....

And lets not get into the mongol and amerindian plains myths where being able to outrun a horse was almost a mark of being a hero. of course, the hero, outrunning a horse regularly, went off and got a horse worthy of him....

...outrunning the wind is harder, afterall. And getting across thrice
nine kingdoms before the end of the week is quite wearing. =)
