Thomas has put his finger on an intersting point:

He was adventuring with FRIENDS. Allies. Even followers. Which, in group combats, lets us get the useful 'last gasp action' and get the heck outta Dodge.
Travelling and fighting alone is a dangerous thing indeed. What is a hero without anyone to witness his heroic deeds? (qv Ethilrist and the Killer Pumpkin of Doom)
I'm really liking HW's focus on communities and how the heroes
support
and are supported by those who love (or hate) them.
But then, that's IS how Orlanth survived the Baths of Nelat.
