The arming ritual explicitly says it provides "bonus points". Bonuses modify an ability, see p.121.

I'm wondering, what exactly do you mean by "result" here? I usually use that word to indicate the degree of success, and absolutely nowhere in the rules is it suggested that rituals provide a bump up. Of course, indirectly they can have that effect if the ability in question is augmented enough.

Yes they do, on pages 236 and 242 for instance. "... bonus to the target number..."
Very specific examples are given for heroquesting in NB p.39 and 43.

Maybe you're mixing things up with the die roll mentioned on p.241 to get the ritual off the ground to begin with? I would include that under things no self-respecting priest would ever fail at.
