I agree that it is non-automatic, but think that other factors are involved. First, heroes gain HP fast enough to negate some aging penalties. Second, heroquesting reduces effects of ageing either by being outside time (and thus skipping days, weeks etc.) or by other (to me undecided means), or by both.
