Or, in the case of a deer, a simple contest with the ranged combat augmented or augmenting one's hunting skill. A major success or better would indicate that the deer is wounded enough that one does not have to go far at all. A minor success might require tracking the wounded deer down, which is very common place.

Or go to a simple contest, and hope for a bump and advantages due to cover, surprise, superior skill and the like. Sorry to say, but I feel D&D is not exactly an accurate representation, however, your description is a series of contests which can be run as either simple contests, ability rolls or an extended contest. Remember, if you want a contest over quickly (one blow) you will have to bid high. And assassinating someone from behind is going to get dicy if you don't take him down in one shot. Hence the big bid and then a parting shot/coupe de grace. Again, augumentations and situational bounuses play a big, big roll. If you are in place and doing well, you should get a bump-up from mastery -- and if its an important killing, then its probably worth a Hero Point, yes?

Slicing a Bureacrat open (Combat of 12?) is very different from trying to play Goon Squad with a clan Champion. Remembering the capabilities of one's prey is the crucial part.
