I see no reason it still can't be a contest, simply the closer is "attacking" with something like run, and if they are charging straight then they are probably bidding very high. Which makes sense- -if you have a good chance of dodging, you close slowly bidding low. If the archer is good and you have no protection, your only chance is to charge quickly and hope you get lucky. Exactly the way the game normally works.
