reminds me of the introduction to Fall of the House of Malan at C2K. "There is rumoured to be a Shamen about, but no one knows what he looks like..." <everyone turns around to stare at the tall, masked figure sporting a magnificent set of antlers standing at the back of the room with the "Outsiders">

That sounds fairly true to me, too (particularly the bit about not wanting too) - maybe for theists it is improved at a penalty (like misapplied worship? he says forgetting exactly what those rules are right now). Since Kolating must know Spirit Combat, however, I guess it must be possible for an Orlanthi to find someone to teach them (persuading them to do so is a whole other ball game mind you...)

That would work too, (and might be more common - maybe my version deteriorates into yours if it gets beaten too many times). I was looking for a way to allow the non-spirit-combat using theist a chance of capturing a spirit without recourse to a shamen. (I'm not sure it's a good idea, but since the GM will set the power of the crystal, and it's availability in the first place, and given the crystal can only hold one spirit (which I don't think I actually said, but I thought it (damn the PC isn't telepathic)) it shouldn't be too abusive).
