This is exactly what I think. I think the option to give up much of yourself, and move outside of the cycle of life and death (or life/death/rebirth) was always there for the greater dragonmages. This is analogous to the phenomenon of dragonewts seeking alternate (faster) paths, and ending up as wyrms or dinosaurs.

Thank you of reminding me of that. I forgot to mention it, but yes. It was something he was forced to do to survive the downfall of EWF. Delecti did not go gently into that good night, but took what desperate and final measures he had to to survive and save his students. Parhaps Delecti also saved the Ducks, who may well be his creations too. At least the ducks still seem to thrive near the upland marsh, and the undead of the marsh are known to have helped them against land stealing orlanthi (KoS, I think)

The Book of Drastic Resolutions would be a good place to start looking, if one wanted to turn into a selfmade vampire, I think.
