If your friend is better than you, then 10 APs in his pool are worth more than 10 APs in your pool. If the opponent is much better than you, you can achieve nothing throwing your APs against him, but your friend might be able to. Trying to hit an opponent that has a mastery or more advantage is quite likely to help them.
