But if the spirits are in the mundane world, how come they aren't hit with the alien world modifier? The answer that it is because they are somehow embodied makes sense. As someone else has already pointed out, disease spirits are embodied within, eg. dirty water, dead bodies, broo faeces, etc. Which only leaves ghosts as an exception. Most ghosts are tied to an area they must haunt - and which therefore provides a 'body' of sorts. The remainder are normally tied to a strong emotion - eg. revenge for murder - which provides the 'body'.

The essential point is not the physical body, but that they have a connection to something which is 'normal' in the mundane world.
