There's nothing in the rules to say so. Maybe Sunsword allows you to summon a sword of pure sunlight with which to bash your opponents. Maybe the summoned sword can smite on its own - similar to the old sunspear spell. Why not?

The great thing about the rules is they are so ill-defined that any use of a feat that the player can convince the GM is justified can be used. I'd be a bit wary about allowing it to attack magic resistance - after all its a SWORD - but that's really up to the GM. I'd certainly consider it against darkness critters.
