Yes. Many English shire counties still have sheriffs (including Nottinghamshire as I recall). They have more of an administrative role than a policing one (though ISTR they get involved in things like evicting protestors from treehouses when new by-passes are being built).

I think the Sheriff confusion comes from the "posse" in Apple Lane. An unfortunate combination.
