For me the difference is simple.
When I was younger with few responsibilities and lots of time and lots of friends with similar inclinations, a rules heavy system was ideal - though rules heavy systems were also in vogue then.
Now I am older with loads of responsibilities (including a wonderful 2 year old boy) I prefer rules light systems - which let me concentrate on the background, the role playing, the story telling and even the attempted powergaming that I am prone to.
