That's more or less how I work it. When the player's do something for the clan, it's a freebie directed raise to the Relationship Clan (or family or temple) and often another + 1 HP (which means they have to spend one to get the full +2) to Clan or earn new Ally/follower.
After a year, the web of relationships between the heroes, their clan, the neighboring clans and their various friends and relations is getting rather complex....
..but we all hate the stinking Black Oaks.
