Not really.
(1) Hero Questers don't ever know exactly what they will meet. The story that someone knows is never totally accurate. For instance, the Orlanthi know of several ways that a Lightbringer party may cross the Western Sea:

Usually Sofala offers herself for the task.
Sometimes Orlanthi fly across on sea gulls.
	Sometimes people walk (!) across.
	Other options may be known.

When setting off, the questers do not know which method will be offered to them.
(2) The myths usually do not tell of surprise and failures. At least, not the exoteric version of the myths. And surprises can happen anytime, at any stage.
(3) Enemies can get into your quest and really muck it up. The GL did this to the Arkati and the Lunars are experts at it.
