Well thats why you use your "Warband Tactics" and "Prepare Ambush" skills to ensure you have plenty of time to prepare before the enemy realise you are there - Which is what the Dragonmeet players did in "the Food Thief"...
When both sides can see each other, you can imagine them both casting feats and psyching themselves up until one of them suddenly charges in, trying to take out the other before they are ready...
