A couple of thoughts about Issaries and merchants...
1) The Issaries keyword has staff fighting, so you'll get close
combat starting at 17, with both staff fighting and spear and shielf
fighting covered. This is a respectable starting point, although
without relevant magic you are certainly at something of a
disadvantage it should not leave them totally useless in combat.
2) Not all merchants automatically have to worship Issaries now!
Note that in the merchant key word it suggests either Issaries or
Orlanth Adventurous. OA initiates will obviously not be as succesful
at getting rich through trading as are Issaries initiates....but
they'll hold up in combat better, and still have the basic merchant
skills. This is probably a good compromise for many player hero
merchants.
As for Lhankor My....if you want them to fight, you'd better work it
into your character background, otherwise you are in trouble!
