Without wanting to drag out this OT thread too much, this is not actually the case. A 2" pipe in the US no more measures 2" than does a 50mm pipe in the EU measure 50mm: sizes for mechanical parts are nominal, not exact. Much of the US engineering industry already uses SI units every day (especially since US govt directives of 1991), and they have not had to change any parts or tools to do so.
