The follower is around unless the narrator feels that the mission or
situation is too dangerous for them. Healers often accompany
warriors, afterall. I use that 13 starting value as a guage of loyalty
and support. If they ask for Extraordiary support, to go into the
Marsh (non-warrior followers) or go on a heroquest then I check
against that value. The hero usually augments their follower trait
with oratory, gifts (to show generosity) and so forth if need be.

That's up to you. My group has a mixture of both. The hunters both
have hunting alynxes that are part and parcel of their lifestyle. But
one of them has an ally, who is an intelligent (they think) alynx who
shows up when he feels like it and leaves when he's bored.
Of course, the alynx PC is another story...
