At the risk of committing the sin of posting without my rules to hand, I seem to recall in the extended contest rules that specifically states you can attack followers -- it might be in that extended example. But sometimes, the only way to take down a huge menacing opponent is to whittle away at his followers while he takes big chunks out of you.... until the multiple attacker penalty starts to hurt him.
