He isn't - Simple Contests don't use AP's just compare one roll against the other to determine if the victory is Complete, Major Minor or Marginal - This in turn translates to Dying, Injured, Hurt or Dazed.

Presumably the Archer takes no physical injury if he looses the simple contest, but could take the appropriate penalty as a situational modifier anyway?
