Yes and No. An Orlanthi Thane doesn't know before hand if the combat is going to be judged as an extended or simple contest, but then he doesn't decide to generate an edge or a bonus either, he just applies his Armour of Woad and invokes the spirit of Orlanth into his Flickering Blade...

In other words, as a general rule I think that *players* should know what sort of contest they are facing before deciding exactly what sort of enhancements they are going to apply.

OTOH, there probably should be some way of dealing with edges in a simple contest, for those occasions where this is not the case (or where the enhancement is more long term - a "permenant enchantment", or a liturgical blessing extended for a season, or whatever - If 2 contestants have a similar level of skill, but one has a ^20 edge then he should have some advantage in a simple contest, just as he does in an extended contest...
