I would suggest that when a character consiously tries to act as their god did in a contested situation then, even though the devotee ability was not used, it is relevant (in fact you allowed this for Karath at least once).

The rules mention in at least one place that the devotee/initiate (/disciple) ability is used in several rituals, in particular, divination.
