As I noted in my previous reply, there is no danger to game balance because of the uniform way that HW treats abilities, magic and items. I would want the player to give an explanation for having the item, and I would insist that the explanation made Gloranthan sense, but apart from that anything goes.

Indeed, good explanations can lead to scenario ideas.

'I dug up the burial mound of Brandbrig Dragon-slayer.'
'A dragonewt gave it to me.'
'I traded it for some cows.'
'My patron gave it to me.'
'In the last worship ceremony, it was the sword that slew the Water
Dragon and freed Heler.'
'Orlanth struck it with seven thunderbolts.'
'I stole it.'
'I always owned the sword, but did not know of its properties until
Wise Ernalenna had a vision about it.'
