If the guard already knows the archer is there, he could use Dodge or Jump (if there is cover nearby to jump towards).

If the guard does not already know of the archer, then part of the archer's activity should including sneaking into a suitable position undetected. That would be a contest between a stealth ability of the archer and a perception ability of the guard.
