I would have to agree that this has a lot to do with gaming style, or at least preferences in gaming style. For example....

Yuck! Obviously I don't want all heroes to look almost the same other than the god that they worship. In my opinion it is in having lots of skills that you get the distinctiveness. For example, using only a few broad skills for a warrior I'm going to choose something like close combat, tough, stubborn, and leadership. Because those are things that I expect to use regularly. Now, with the wonders of the 100 word write up, I'll actually have a plethora of things like drink the keg dry, fly kite, contact with his ex-year wife down in Esrolia, boating, CreakStreamRiver geography, and so on.

In short, yah, I like all the fiddly bits. That is much of what makes a character come to life for me. Further, I don't like playing specialized characters. I don't want to play a warrior who is useless when it comes to parlaying the ducks, nor a scholar who can do little in a fight but cower in a corner. I want a rollicking campaign with a variety of challenges, and I want to be in the middle of all those, doing my best to much through with my mish-mash of skills.

Obviously we differ in prefered campaign style!
