I think (pace Alex) this point needs to be made. I suspect some who criticize the HW rules on this list have not actually played the game, or played it very little.

When I started playing HW, I resisted the urge to alter the rules. This was a good decision: many of the rules that seem 'wrong' work better in practice then one might expect (especially if a RQ grognard). Only after some experience have I written any house rules, and they are minor ones.
