My previous group had such a case. The PCs were being ground down by a very nasty chaos creature. The best fighter in the band was reduced below 0 AP and AP lending from the weakest fighter and a follower with no combat abilities (an alynx kitten who distracted the chaos creature) kept them going. In this context AP lending made a huge difference.
