And some of the herds -- some of the lands may be associated with specific temples or clan ring positions (the Chieftan's herd)

Something like that. And much of the material gotten by a member of
the family or bloodline is shared out between them. It does mean
that
that an adventurer who does very well may have to share with his
no-good cousins. However, when it comes time to pay that ransom or
stop a blood feud, its your family who will stand by you. Also, when
you're on trial, thye make handy witnesses (or helpful folks for
collecting that ransom you want)
