5W4 sounds about right to me. When my I was 6-7, because my mother had no place else to live, we spent the winter in our summer cabin in Northern New Jersey, which is "temperate zone," lake country, hills, about 600 feet above sea level. Pumped cold water from a well, no heat except a stove, no electricity (kerosene lamps).

Poeple who live in Western Europe (Gulf Stream) let alone the West Coast, have no idea. And people who have never been without central heating have no idea. The various infections I got during that year are the reason I am hard of hearing.
That was probably equivalent to being in Sartar in the winter.

If you have seen the Alps in winter, let alone the Rockies, imagine crossing them. 5W4 for sure. It would take a hero or an incredibly well-prepared party to get across.
