What do you mean by 'living'? A longhouse would be at the centre of a complex of buildings. Some people might eat and work in the longhouse but not sleep there. Thralls, for example, are likely to sleep in huts. To a first approximation, I'd say one longhouse per carl family. That carl family would have some associated thralls or cottars, but only the carl family would sleep in the longhouse itself.
