Dead Gods and Disciples

In the very good Planescape module, "Dead Gods," the death of a God is followed almost immediately by the death of his "proxies," who are pretty much the equivalent of Gloranthan disciples, his direct representatives on the planes.

The natural question occurs for HW -- if a God dies, which clearly has happened in the past and is going to be happening in the Hero Wars, do all his disciples cork off, as well? It would seem natural that they should. Or else perhaps most of them die, but some one of them, for some strange reason, survives, and tries and mayhap succeeds in "becoming" the "new" God of whatever?

Inquiring minds want to know.
