Part of being a disciple means lots of heroquesting. Lots of heroquesting means you will, by the time you're a disciple, have picked up a mythic enemy or designated opponent (Harmast/Iron Vrok frex)...

When the god dies, you loose your powers. Your designated opponent has not. Sticky, Painful Death ensues.

The problem with taking over a god's spot is that its a new thing AND an old thing.... But its possible. Depends on how big the spot you're trying to fill is.
