An excellent point (though I think this meaning of the word fey originaly comes from the vikings).

To the vikings, feyness was one of the most feared and mysterious things. Berserkers are one side of it, people suffering from other forms of combat shock are one too.

There's a quality that comes to people who have seen "too much", as can be seen from some war veterans. This makes them strange and often scary to normal people. They appear to be broken or changed in a way that can not be undone.

The relife sickness certainly seems to fit the category.
