Another useful method of using the flashback is the "Villain's Flashback" in which you allow the players to play through an earlier part of a villains life. This can give them a greater understanding of the villain's motives which are not necessarily all bad, chaos is a terrible thing after all. Good examples of this are in virtually every book you have ever read. Only rather than directed at the reader you direct it at the players.
