Minis Review

Good Broo figures are getting hard to find - Ral Partha did some nice "Official" ones, Dragon Claw does some (If you can get anything out of the company), and the old Trollkin Forge/Citadel ones can still be found occasionally. Games Workshop has "Beastmen" in their Warhammer range that can fit the bill, but they are expensive, and too regimented. Old Citadel/Games Workshop beastmen had all sorts of variety - bulldog, cow, etc as well as goat heads, but now they have small guys with small horns, or big guys with big horns.

However, while in one of the two local shops in Fresno, I saw that reaper has a set of three beastmen (14013 Beastmen and Champion) (you can see them at http://www.reapermini.com/fantasy/gallery/warlord?&page=2), and Chainmail has a wonderful chaotic "Slaughterpit Zombie Gnoll" (A really bad picture can be found at
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/chainmail/Slaughterpit-Zombie.jpg)

Reaper's Beastmen and Champion
Three bodies, three heads and three metal slotta-bases make up the set. All three stand approximately 35mm Sole-to-Eye, depending on the head you chose, and what angle you attach it at.

Body one holds his two-handed axe in a fighting stance, left arm forward. The axehead is rather large, with a wicked back hook (all the axes are based on this pattern). His belt has a demon-face for a buckle (what you can see of it - it's partially obscured by his arm), and he has a loincloth with a bit of chainmail to protect his important bits. He has two bracelets (one a bit of chain, one either leather or metal), His chest, shoulders and neck are well furred, as are his goat-like legs (true for all the models). The belt has metal discs scattered on it, and he has the cutest little goat-tail.

Body two is the Champion, and he stands in a wide-open stance with a be-runed axe and sword. He's got Chain over most of his chest and back and down his loincloth. His forarms have elaborate braclets. Three plates are riveted to the chain to cover his shoulders. His belt is more along the lines of an armored stomacher.

Body three is like body one, excpt he is right-arm forward, rather than left. His bracelets look like Leather and fur, respectively.

The three heads look like they mount easily on any of the bodies. All the heads are goat-like, with nasty sneers. Head one has small curved horns and a pony tail, head two has larger horns curved more to the sides and a ponytail, and head three has horns curving around the back and no ponytail. The head and necks have a simple ball joint, allowing you to position the head at almost any angle.

There was a bit of flash, but not too terrible, on the Champion, and some mold-lines evident under the arms of one of the minions.

A nice little Hero-with-Followers group for RPG or wargaming.

Chainmail Slaughterpit Zombie Gnoll
This is a chaos monstrosity and no mistake! The whole thing stands ~45mm S-E, with hands that reach up higher.

The model comes in 5 pieces -body, head, sword arm, shield arm and slotta-base. The cool bit is that the body has anb extra head popping out of the chest, and the separate arms are both left arms - the beastie has two right arms (with axe and just claws) as well. Now that's a major Bad-guy broo for you! No self-respecting hero should fail a "Sense Chaos" test on this puppy. Uroxi will probably get migraines from him.

The heads are vaguely dog/jackal/hyena-like, with nasty grins full of lots o ' teeth. Parts of the body are sculpted as if the skin has fallen away, and the skin is pulled tight over the faces and arms. He has open sores visible on most parts of his body.

His chest and abdomen are protected by chain, and he wears partial leg armor (thigh protection on the right, a knee-cop on the left). His shield has a molded-on skull-and-backbone, and has three blades projecting from the back edge. He has a long doggy tail coming out through his chain armor (I wouldn' t want to be the one to dress him in the morning!)
