In our campaign, you become a Lawspeaker because the rest of the clan are useless ditherers (and I never claimed he was skilled). And the previous Lawspeaker was killed (a pattern might be emerging here) during the first adventure of the campaign.

Actually, he's gone mad and vanished into the wilds. There's a definite Pendragon flavour to this campaign.
